Grape seed extract with oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPC) as the major components has been evaluated for joint health in several scientific publications. The results indicate a role played by grape seed extract proanthocyanidins in relieving osteoarthritis, autoimmune arthritis and collagen-induced arthritis in animal models. The positive observations have not yet been investigated in human clinical trials.

In a study published in 2009 Immunology Letter, researchers investigated effects of grape seed extract on collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) in mice. It is observed that grape seed extract treatment significantly attenuated the severity of CIA in a dose-dependent manner and reduced the histology scores for synovial inflammation, cartilage erosion, bone erosion, and the number of osteoclasts. Osteoclasts are the cells to destruct bones and osteoblasts are cells to build bones. Grape seed extract significantly reduced hydrogen peroxide production by anti-CD3-monoclonal-antibody-stimulated CD4+ splenocytes.

In a study published in 2010 Immunology Letter, researchers reported that grape seed extract regulates inflammatory T cell differentiation, and concluded that grape seed extract may serve as a possible novel therapeutic agent for inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis.

In a study published in 2010 journal of Experimental and Molecular Medicine, Researchers evaluated the effects of grape seed extract on monosodium iodoacetate (MIA)-induced arthritis of the knee joint of rat, which is an animal model of human OA. It is concluded that grape seed extract is antinociceptive and is protective against joint damage in the MIA-treated rat model of OA.
